Common steels
Four or five large makers worldwide produce most steels available
on the commercial market . These steel producers use the same
techniques and the same chemical content on a large number of
their products. These steels are identical in all but name or
are so similar they can be treated the same. A good example of
this is the Bohler steel K460. This steel has a variety of names
by producer. Its Udderholm equivalent is Arne and its AISI code
O1.]
Other steels such as Ground Flat Stock and Gauge Plate have identical
or very similar alloy content so will require the same heat treatment.

| 420 Stainless mould steel |
Will air-harden in smaller sections.
Low distortion if air hardened, but larger sizes quenched in
oil may distort. More resistant to abrasion and corrosion than
2767. Smaller/medium sizes may be vacuum treated. May be used
for large tools. |

ultra high hardness. Will accept high polish. May be vacuum
treated. Distorts less than T1 _ |

Similar to M2 but higher 'red' hardness
and abrasion resistance. May be vacuum treated. High hardening
temperature leads to risks during heat treatment and increased
chance of distortion. |
